About Backyard Snowstorm

We officially founded Backyard Snowstorm in 2017, though our journey began nearly a decade earlier in 2008. At that time, Burk, our founder, had three young boys who loved skiing and spending time outdoors in the foothills of Salt Lake City, Utah. As the boys grew, he started thinking about making his own snow in the backyard as a way to build a small ski jump, igloo, and other fun winter projects. After researching and watching hours of YouTube videos, he set out to build a DIY snow gun.

As a family, we saw an opportunity to do something fun together and hopefully create lasting memories. Burk’s background in chemical engineering helped us navigate many of the technical details involved in building our first home snowmaker. Even after constructing the initial DIY snow gun, we made numerous trips to the plumbing store to find parts and continuously improve the design. After years of making snow (and quite a bit of ice), we learned the tricks and science behind successfully making snow in the backyard. Along the way, we also learned what not to do when making snow—haha!

Over time, we grew to love the snowmaking process and the memories it created for our family. Soon, our neighbors and friends were asking for help to build their own home snowmakers. Finally, in 2017, we decided to launch Backyard Snowstorm. Our main goal, then and now, is to share what we’ve learned with others who want to make snow and create memories. We strive to offer the highest quality snowmakers and provide the most comprehensive information about home snowmaking. After years of building, learning, and refining our designs, we’ve made it easier for you to jump right into the fun part! Today, we take pride in the thousands of snow guns we’ve sent all over the world, helping countless people make snow, create memories, and discover a cool new hobby!
