Imagine waking up to a backyard covered in fresh snow, even when there hasn't been a snowstorm. With the Forecaster Snow Gun from Backyard Snowstorm, you can take advantage of cold winter weather and make real snow right at home.

The Forecaster is our best-selling snow gun, designed for homeowners who want serious snowmaking capabilities without commercial ski resort equipment. Whether you're building a backyard sledding hill, creating snow forts with your kids, or covering your yard in fresh snow, the Forecaster gives you the power to make it happen.

What Is the Forecaster Snow Gun?

The Forecaster is a residential snowmaking machine that uses pressurized water and compressed air to create real snow in freezing conditions.

Unlike the smaller Little Cloud, which operates directly from a garden hose, the Forecaster uses a pressure washer to significantly increase snow production.

Its professionally engineered design features CNC-machined anodized aluminum components, stainless steel misting nozzles, and a commercial nucleation nozzle. These components work together to turn ordinary water into snowflakes before they reach the ground.

The Forecaster is designed to be powerful, easy to operate, and expandable, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced backyard snowmakers.

How Much Snow Can the Forecaster Make?

One of the Forecaster's biggest advantages is its adjustable snow production capacity.

Depending on your pressure washer's water flow rate, the Forecaster can produce approximately 1–6 inches of snow per hour in favorable conditions.

As a general rule, every gallon per minute (GPM) of water flow produces approximately one inch of snow per hour.

Water Flow Approximate Snow Production
1 GPM 1 inch per hour
2 GPM 2 inches per hour
3 GPM 3 inches per hour
4 GPM 4 inches per hour
5 GPM 5 inches per hour
6 GPM 6 inches per hour

The Forecaster can cover an area approximately 15 feet wide and 25–50 feet long, depending on water flow, weather conditions, and setup.

For example, a 4 GPM system operating for 10 hours could theoretically produce approximately 40 inches of accumulated snow in its primary coverage area under favorable conditions.

Actual accumulation varies, but these capabilities make the Forecaster ideal for building substantial snow piles, backyard sledding hills, and snow-covered play areas.

What Equipment Do You Need?

The Forecaster operates using equipment available from most hardware stores.

1. Pressure Washer

A pressure washer supplies the high-pressure water necessary for snowmaking. The Forecaster works with pressure washers rated between 1–6 GPM and requires at least 1,000 PSI.

2. Air Compressor

An air compressor supplies the compressed air needed to form ice crystals. The Forecaster requires at least 5 CFM at 90 PSI, with 5–6 CFM recommended.

3. Garden Hose and Connections

A standard garden hose supplies water to your pressure washer. You'll also need a pressure washer hose, air hose, and the appropriate fittings to connect your equipment.

4. Freezing Weather

The Forecaster requires sufficiently cold conditions to make snow. Temperature and humidity both affect production, with colder, drier conditions generally providing the best results.

Once everything is connected, the Forecaster's adjustable stand and quick-connect fittings make setup straightforward.

Can You Expand the Forecaster?

Absolutely. Expandability is one of the Forecaster's most valuable features.

You can start with a single pressure washer and expand your system as your snowmaking needs grow.

Backyard Snowstorm offers specialized Train Packages that combine multiple pressure washers into one higher-flow snowmaking system.

  • Double Train: Combines two pressure washers.

  • Triple Train: Combines three pressure washers.

  • Quad Train: Combines four pressure washers.

These systems use an engineered high-pressure manifold to combine water flow safely and efficiently.

For example, combining four 1.5 GPM pressure washers gives you a total of 6 GPM, allowing the Forecaster to operate at its maximum rated capacity.

This approach is especially useful because smaller residential pressure washers are often more affordable and easier to power than large commercial pumps.

You can begin with a basic setup, then add pressure washers and the appropriate expansion equipment whenever you're ready to produce more snow.

Who Is the Forecaster Designed For?

The Forecaster is our most versatile snow gun and an excellent choice for homeowners who want flexibility and substantial snow production.

It's particularly well suited for:

  • Families: Build sledding hills, snow forts, and winter play areas for your kids.

  • Backyard snowmaking enthusiasts: Produce significant amounts of snow during cold winter nights.

  • Homeowners with medium or large yards: Cover larger areas than smaller entry-level snow guns.

  • First-time snowmakers: Start with a single pressure washer and expand later.

  • Holiday events: Create real snow for Christmas celebrations, winter parties, and outdoor displays.

If you're looking for a simple system that doesn't require a pressure washer, the Little Cloud may be a better fit.

For customers who need even greater snow production, the Cold Front supports up to 10 GPM and is designed for larger snowmaking applications.

When Can You Make Snow?

The Forecaster doesn't require natural snowfall. It only needs the right weather conditions.

Successful snowmaking depends on wet-bulb temperature, which combines air temperature and humidity to determine how effectively water can freeze.

Colder temperatures and lower humidity allow water droplets to freeze more efficiently, improving snow quality and production.

Cold winter nights are often ideal because temperatures typically remain low for extended periods.

With the SnowBase app, you can check upcoming snowmaking conditions, monitor hourly forecasts, and plan your snowmaking sessions around the best weather.
