An air compressor is an important part of every Backyard Snowstorm snowmaking system. Compressed air helps break water into tiny droplets, giving those droplets the opportunity to cool and freeze as they travel through the air.

You don't need to be an expert in compressed air to get started. Backyard Snowstorm snow guns are designed to be plug-and-play, so choosing the right compressor is straightforward.

What Size Air Compressor Do You Need?

The most important specification to look for is CFM at 90 PSI. For the Forecaster and Cold Front, we recommend a compressor that provides at least 5 CFM at 90 PSI, with 5–7 CFM at 90 PSI being a great range for most setups.

The Little Cloud requires at least 4.5 CFM at 90 PSI.

A larger compressor will work, but going significantly above these requirements will not improve snow quality or performance.

What Should You Look For?

Beyond CFM, there are a few other things worth considering when choosing an air compressor.

Noise: Snowmaking can take time, so a quieter compressor can make your setup more enjoyable and help minimize noise for your neighbors.

Durability: A residential-grade compressor that meets the CFM requirements is more than adequate for most backyard snowmakers. If you plan to make snow frequently for years to come, look for a model with an induction motor and cast-iron pump for increased durability.

Portability: Depending on your setup, you may want a compressor that is easy to move and store when you're not making snow.

Do You Need to Buy a Compressor?

Not necessarily. If you already have an air compressor that meets the required CFM rating, you can use it with your Backyard Snowstorm system.

If you need one, compatible compressors are readily available from local hardware stores and online retailers. We also have recommended equipment options to help you find a compressor that works well with our snow guns.
