The amount of water flowing through your snow gun has a major impact on how much snow you can produce, making the pressure washer one of the most important pieces of equipment in your setup.
Why Does GPM Matter?
When choosing a pressure washer for snowmaking, GPM (gallons per minute) is the most important specification to consider.
GPM tells you how much water the pressure washer can deliver to the snow gun. In general, more water means more potential snow production when weather conditions are suitable.
As a general rule of thumb, 1 GPM can produce approximately 1 inch of snow per hour, 2 GPM can produce approximately 2 inches per hour, and so on. Actual production will vary based on temperature, humidity, snow gun configuration, and other conditions.
This is why the Forecaster and Cold Front are designed to handle different ranges of water flow. A higher-GPM pressure washer can allow you to produce more snow without changing your snow gun.
What Should You Look For in a Pressure Washer?
GPM
Start by looking at the GPM rating, since this determines how much water you can send through your snow gun. The Forecaster can handle up to 6 GPM, while the Cold Front can handle up to 10 GPM.
Quality
Snowmaking can involve long operating sessions, so a quality pressure washer can be a worthwhile investment. Commercial-grade machines typically use more durable motors and pumps that are designed to handle frequent use.
Noise
Noise can also be an important consideration, especially in a residential neighborhood. Induction motors are generally much quieter than traditional brush motors, making them a good choice for backyard snowmaking.
Electric or Gas?
Pressure washers are available in both electric and gas-powered models. For most backyard snowmaking setups, we recommend electric pressure washers. They are convenient, easy to operate, and well suited to residential use.

Residential Pressure Washers
You don't need an expensive commercial machine to start making snow. Residential electric pressure washers can be an affordable way to get started, and many models provide around 1–2 GPM at 110V.
While residential pressure washers generally aren't built for the same level of long-term use as commercial machines, they can provide reliable service for backyard snowmaking.
If you want more water flow without purchasing one large commercial pressure washer, there is another option: use multiple pressure washers together in a train system.
Using Multiple Pressure Washers
One of the advantages of the Forecaster and Cold Front systems is the ability to expand your snowmaking capacity over time.
Instead of purchasing one large, high-GPM pressure washer, you can combine multiple smaller pressure washers using a train system. This can be a cost-effective way to increase water flow and snow production while allowing you to build your system gradually.
For example, multiple lower-cost pressure washers can provide a higher combined GPM than a single residential machine, giving you the ability to increase your snowmaking output as your setup grows.
Commercial Pressure Washers
For serious snowmaking, commercial-grade pressure washers offer greater durability and higher water-flow options.
Commercial 120V machines can provide excellent performance while still working with a standard U.S. outlet. For even higher output, 230V commercial pressure washers can typically provide 2–5 GPM, opening the door to significantly greater snow production.
The right pressure washer ultimately depends on how much snow you want to make, how large an area you want to cover, and how much you're willing to invest in your system.
One Important Exception
The Little Cloud does not require a pressure washer. It can operate using a standard garden hose, making it the simplest option for getting started with backyard snowmaking.
